  • Centrocercus urophasianus urophasianus
  • Mass: 1 kg (female); 2 kg (male)
  • Length: up to 75 cm
  • Females often roost at the base of large sagebrush plants, camouflaged by their mottled plumage
  • A permanent resident in its breeding grounds but may move short distances to lower elevations during winter
  • In 2016, 33 males were counted at Saskatchewan’s two active leks, up from 18 in 2012
  • Unlike most grouse, digestive system is not adapted for digesting hard seeds
