Silk Moth Eyespot

The Bug of the Week on September 5, 2013 was the Giant Silk Moth. This week highlights one of its eyespots.

The eyespot of a Polyphemus Moth, up close! The common name of this species comes from the fact that each wing has an eyespot, hence the name from the Greek myth of the single-eyed cyclops (named Polyphemus!) At this magnification you can see that the brilliant coloured areas are made up of hundreds of tiny scales.
