Rove Beetle

This large, handsome rove beetle (Creophilus maxillosus villosus) occurs throughout Canada. Adults and larvae of this species can be found primarily on carrion of any type, but are there as predators, feeding not only on maggots and adult flies, but also of arthropods attracted to carrion. Adults will form their bodies into a tight ball and roll off carrion into leaf litter when disturbed.
