Parasitic Bumblebee

Although this looks like a typical bumble bee, looks can be deceiving. This is a cuckoo bumble bee! She does not collect or carry pollen herself, which is why you do not see a distinct shiny pollen basket on the hind leg.  Instead, these cuckoos sneak into the nest of a true bumble bee to lay their eggs. As there are no “worker” cuckoo bumble bees, these large insects are usually seen most often in the spring when true bumble bees are starting their nests, or in the autumn before they overwinter.
