Luna Moth

The Luna Moth is one of our largest and most spectacular silkworm moths.  The feathery antennae of the male (shown here) serve an important function; detecting female pheromones in very small quantities. Pheromones are “messenger” chemicals produced by one animal to affect the behaviour of another, especially during mating. In the case of these large silkworm moths, males have been recorded to travel nearly 50 km to a female, following a pheromone trail in the air.
