This giant silk moth, the Polyphemus Moth, is one of our largest and most beautiful. The attention grabbers are the large, purplish eyespots on the hind wings. It is not hard to imagine how these spots could help protect this moth from being eaten by birds; do the shape of the wings and position of the eyespots remind you of a bird that hunts other birds? The species is widespread in North America, and the caterpillars feed on a wide range of hardwood trees.
